A Spearman’s rho correlation for rank ordered data was then employed to investigate whether the ranks of the class and school level value-added residuals differed significantly under each method. Classes and schools that fell outside 95% statistical confidence boundaries under each method were also identified. Research Question 4 Examination of the class level residuals from both regression models was undertaken to investigate Research Question 4: to what extent are different classes within a particular school identified as ‘more’ or ‘less’ than effective according to the residual score under both the single-level means-on-means, and multilevel modelling methods?
Class and school level residual estimates from the single-level means-on-means and the multilevel regression models were saved for comparison to investigate Research Questions 3 27 ELDERFIELD AND WAUGH and 4. Research Question 3 was investigated by comparing the stability of residual ranks under each regression model. Positional changes in the class and school ranks under each model were compared, then a Spearman’s rho correlation for rankordered data was employed to investigate whether these ranks differed significantly under each model at either the class or school level.
