Again there is no pavement here, so take care. m. m. Immediately beyond the chapel, and with some relief, you take the very next left, noting the pretty Ormonde Cottage on the corner, and the not so pretty Market Square garage on the other side! Follow this road, passing a very good Tourist Information Office, to Market Square, Petworth’s focal point. It is the site of one of the last remaining street fairs in southern England. To your left is the magnificent Natwest Bank building. You may wish to linger in Market Square but the walk continues by your turning left up Lombard Street.

You begin at Alfriston, in front of the parish church on a spacious and lush green, with the delights of Alfriston village centre just a couple of minutes away. Alfriston, standing beside the picturesque Cuckmere River, has been described as the capital of the Cuckmere Valley; it was founded in Saxon times and was once an important port and market town. In its centre is a market square (it is actually more of a triangle) surrounded by shops and houses with fine brickwork, timber frames, tile-hanging and weatherboarding.

When I walked this section in summer 2002, there was no signpost here but the route of the South Downs Way, and our Best Village walk, does indeed turn right here, heading north-westwards towards Windover Hill. You continue to climb on a clear path, and can now enjoy tremendous views to the sea, both to your left and the right; the houses you can see beside the sea to your right are at the eastern end of Eastbourne. As you continue, however, the best views to the sea are to your left, with glorious downland scenery in between.
