It was the only form of independent prestige which required no further validation. As a result of this, all open scholarships tended to result in an increase in the number of doctors and lawyers. In some of the larger islands, separate scholarships were given for science and for arts, but all led in the same direction -towards the professions. Where it was desired to direct scholarship winners into a given field, this had to be specifically provided for. The Government of Trinidad, for instance, gave special agricultural scholarships to the Imperial College, special grants to surveyors in training; the Government of Jamaica created a separate agricultural scholarship.

There was a selective memory and through harping on the pleasant and the prestige giving, the unpleasant was pushed into the background and forgotten. All in all, then, the ideas spread by those who had been educated abroad did not help the student who was proceeding to the UK after the Second World War. Indeed, the particular preoccupation of the West Indian with 'marrying light' accentuated the distortion of the situation. Because of this preoccupation, there was a tremendous emotional interest in the affairs of people who had married white wives.
