These are concordant or homologous identifications based, according to Racker, on introjection and projection, on the echo of the external in the internal, on the recognition of what is alien as one's own -- "this (you) is I" -- and the association of one's own with what is alien -- "that (I) is you". Concordant identifications would be a reproduction of the analyst's own past processes that are being relived in response to the stimulus from the patient, giving rise to a sublimated positive countertransference that determines a higher degree of empathy.

In another paragraph, Racker stresses that the analyst "repeats" earlier experiences in which the analysand represents the analyst's internal objects; the combination of these latter experiences (which always and continuously exist) can be called "complementary countertransference". In my opinion, this countertransference reaction is based on an emotional attitude due to the analyst's neurotic residues reactivated by the conflicts introduced by the patient. This means that it takes shape within the first situation of Process B, which I have described above, in which the analyst is a passive object of the analysand's projections, for example his internal objects, but he reacts with countertransference because of his own anxieties and the reactivation of his own conflicts with his internal objects.

Focusing upon this alteration of reality is often a crucial preparatory step for the interpretation of a projective identification. 39 The interpretation that was eventually offered involved explicit reference to: the patient's unconscious conception of a loss of a valued part of himself that had resulted from Mr J's departure; the defensive fantasy of locating the weak self in the therapist; and the reality of the interpersonal interaction by means of which these fantasies were enacted. The patient's enhanced capacity to experience feelings of loss as represented in the dream, served as a partial validation for the interpretation.
