The input voice signal is first band-limited by a low-pass filter and then periodically sampled to generate a time-sampled, band-limited signal. These samples are then made discrete in amplitude by the process of quantization in which the continuous sample value is replaced by the closest discrete value from a set of quantization levels. The coder formats the quantized signal for transmission or multiplexing with other digital signals. Pulse code modulation (PCM) represents each quantization level with a binary code.
