Altrincham Grammar School (AGS) was established in 1912 following the Balfour Education Act of 1902 which aimed to create a national system of, partly fee-paying, secondary education. The school opened with fifty-seven pupils and three staff. In 1974, it was passed to the newly formed Trafford Metropolitan Borough until 1996 when it became Grant Maintained. In September 1999 it was transformed into a Foundation School and in 2003 it was given the status of a specialist language college. The Ofsted1 Report of 21 and 22 November 2007 rated it as ‘Outstanding’.
