Altrincham Grammar School (AGS) was established in 1912 following the Balfour Education Act of 1902 which aimed to create a national system of, partly fee-paying, secondary education. The school opened with fifty-seven pupils and three staff. In 1974, it was passed to the newly formed Trafford Metropolitan Borough until 1996 when it became Grant Maintained.
